A provisional ball is played when there's a reasonable doubt the original ball is out of bounds or lost outside a penalty area. Procedure: announce 'I'm playing a provisional' (if you don't announce it, the second ball becomes the ball in play automatically under stroke-and-distance), play the provisional, search for the original. If you find the original: continue with it (the provisional doesn't count). If original is lost: the provisional is in play with a 1-stroke penalty. Provisional balls save significant time — without them, players would have to return to the tee every time they lose a ball.
