Full Definition
Any player (except in a water hazard) can declare their ball unplayable anywhere on the course. Three options, each with a 1-stroke penalty: 1) Stroke and distance — play from where the previous stroke was played. 2) Back-on-the-line — drop on a line from the hole through the ball spot, going back as far as desired. 3) Lateral relief — drop within 2 club-lengths of the ball spot, no closer to the hole. In a bunker: options 1 and 3 must be taken in the bunker; option 2 can be taken outside the bunker for an additional penalty stroke (total 2 strokes). Knowing unplayable rules saves strokes — many golfers take the worst option by default.
