Driving accuracy is the highest-leverage scoring improvement most amateur golfers can make. Statistically, every 10-yard gain in driving accuracy (hitting more fairways) is worth more than 10 extra yards of distance. These 5 drills fix the most common driving problems.
Place a headcover 12 inches outside your lead foot, pointing toward the target.
Make swings without hitting the headcover on the downswing. If you hit it, you're coming over the top.
Place an alignment stick along your toe line. Place a second stick parallel to the target line 2 feet outside the ball.
Hit drives with both sticks visible. Your swing path should travel inside the outer stick on the downswing.
Set up normally. Make 5 slow-motion swings (30% speed) focusing only on feeling the club face square at impact.
Then hit normal shots immediately after, keeping only the face-square feeling. Don't think about anything else.
Hit 10 drives with the ball 1 inch above normal tee height. Then 10 at normal. Then 10 at 1 inch below normal.
Compare results. Which height produces the most consistent, penetrating ball flight?
Hit 20 drives at 70% power, focusing exclusively on hitting the center of the face.
Gradually increase to 80%, then 90%. Stop when accuracy drops. That's your sustainable swing speed.
"Driving accuracy compounds over 18 holes โ 10 extra fairways per round means 10 easier approach shots, which means 10 better scoring opportunities. The math makes driving accuracy the #1 handicap-reduction opportunity."
