Inconsistent iron contact is the hallmark of the amateur golfer. Thin shots, fat shots, and heel/toe contact cost 4-6 strokes per round compared to consistently centered contact. These 5 drills target the root causes of inconsistent iron ball-striking.
Hit iron shots off a mat focusing only on the sound and feeling of ball-then-turf contact sequence.
The ball should be struck before the club contacts the ground. Listen for the correct sequence.
Place two tees 1 inch wider than your iron head on each side of the ball.
Hit iron shots between the tees. This prevents path deviation to either side that causes heel/toe contact.
Take your stance. As you begin your backswing, step your trail foot back 6 inches.
On the downswing, step it back to normal position. Hit the shot from the re-planted position.
Hit 20 iron shots. After each shot, examine the divot's direction.
Divot should point at target or slightly left of target (for right-handed golfers). Divot pointing right = over-the-top.
Hit iron shots with your swing going from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock only (half swings).
Hit 20 half swings focusing only on center contact. Gradually extend to full swing while keeping the contact.
"Solid iron contact comes from a consistent, repeatable swing arc with forward shaft lean at impact. Every drill that improves your ball-first contact sequence directly improves your iron consistency."
GOATY's 7-gate system specifically measures the mechanics that produce solid iron contact: loading, head position, lead arm structure, and impact angle. When GOATY scores improve, so does your iron ball-striking quality on the course.
