A GOATY live lesson is unlike any golf instruction you have experienced. Instead of watching a video and hoping you are doing it right, GOATY watches YOU through your phone camera, evaluates your swing against the GOAT Model, and speaks coaching cues directly to you after every single rep.
This guide explains exactly how live lessons work, what the 7-gate system evaluates, and how to structure your sessions for maximum improvement.
How Live Lessons Work
- Set up your phone: Position your phone 6-8 feet away with the camera facing you (face-on view). Use a tripod or stable surface.
- Start the lesson: GOATY calibrates to your body and establishes your baseline position.
- Make swings: Swing at your normal pace. No balls needed. GOATY evaluates each swing in real time.
- Receive feedback: After each rep, GOATY speaks a coaching cue based on what it observed. The cue targets your most important improvement area.
- Improve: As you respond to the cues, your gate pass rates improve and GOATY advances you to the next focus area.
The 7-Gate System
GOATY evaluates your swing through 7 biomechanical gates, each measuring a specific aspect of your movement:
- G1 — Trail Arm Structure: Is the trail arm maintaining connection and supporting the backswing?
- G2 — Lead Arm Control: Is the lead arm maintaining extension for swing arc width?
- G3 — Head Stability: Is the head staying centered or drifting laterally?
- G4 — Pelvis-Leads-Chest: Does the pelvis initiate the downswing before the chest?
- G5 — Pelvis Control: Is the pelvis rotating rather than sliding?
- G6-G7 — Through-Swing: Is structure maintained through impact and follow-through?
Coaching cues for each gate are ranked by a contextual bandit learning system that tracks which cues produce the best outcomes. You receive the cue most likely to work for someone with your specific pattern.
Step Progression
Step 1 (Load & Re-center): Focuses on the backswing. Loading pressure into the trail side while keeping the head stable. Gates G1-G3 are the primary focus.
Step 2 (Containment & Transition): Focuses on the transition and downswing. Sequencing, pelvis control, and maintaining structure through impact. Gates G4-G7.
GOAT Drill: Full swing evaluation with all 7 gates active. The complete assessment that generates your GOAT Score.
Voice Coaching
GOATY uses a hybrid voice system combining local speech processing with AI text intelligence. The voice coaching adapts to your session: when you are doing well, encouragement and refinement cues. When you are struggling, simplified cues and frustration-aware coaching. When you ask questions (about weight distribution, grip, or mechanics), GOATY responds with context-aware answers based on your current swing data.
Getting the Most from Each Session
- Keep sessions to 20-30 minutes. Quality over quantity. Fatigue degrades swing mechanics.
- Focus on one gate per session. Your brain processes one movement change at a time.
- Practice indoors. GOATY is designed for indoor use. Good lighting and a stable phone setup are all you need.
- Trust the progression. The gate system advances you when you are ready. Do not rush to the next step.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does a GOATY live lesson work?
Set up your phone camera facing you. GOATY tracks 33 body landmarks in real time, evaluates your swing through 7 biomechanical gates, and speaks coaching cues after every rep. No equipment needed beyond your phone.
Do I need to hit golf balls during a live lesson?
No. GOATY evaluates your body movement, not ball flight. You can practice indoors without a club, with a club but no ball, or outdoors hitting balls. The system works in all scenarios.
How long should a live lesson be?
20-30 minutes. Short, focused sessions prevent fatigue that degrades mechanics. Three 20-minute sessions per week produces better results than one 60-minute session.
What are the 7 gates?
G1 (trail arm structure), G2 (lead arm control), G3 (head stability), G4 (pelvis-leads-chest sequencing), G5 (pelvis rotation vs slide), G6-G7 (through-swing structure). Each measures a specific aspect of swing biomechanics.
