Golf Balance Drills for a Stable, Powerful Swing

Loss of balance is the silent killer of good ball-striking — fix it with these drills

Balance is the foundation of every element of a good golf swing. Without it, consistent contact, accurate direction, and maximum power are impossible. Yet most golfers never practice balance explicitly — they assume it will improve along with everything else. These drills target balance specifically and create rapid, measurable improvements.
1

The One-Leg Balance Drill

Make half-swings while standing on your trail leg only. Hit shots from this position with a 7-iron at 50% power. The drill forces your trail side to maintain perfect balance through impact and trains the pressure transfer from trail to lead foot. Initially you'll wobble — that's the point. Within 20 balls, the stability will dramatically improve as your body finds the right balance point.

Drill Tip: Progress to full swings on one leg only after mastering half-swings. It seems impossible but it's not — and the balance transfer to your normal swing is immediate.
2

The Feet Together Drill

Hit shots with your feet together (touching). This is the classic Ben Hogan balance drill and remains one of the most effective balance trainers ever discovered. Feet together removes the wide stance that many golfers use to compensate for poor balance — forcing you to genuinely balance on your own. Start with half-swings and gradually work up to full swings. If you can make solid contact with feet together, your balance is excellent.

Drill Tip: Hit 10 feet-together shots before every bucket of balls. It recalibrates your sense of center faster than any other drill.
3

The Finish Hold Drill

Make your swing and hold your finish position for 5 full seconds. If you can't hold the finish without moving a foot or losing balance, your swing is imbalanced. The finish should be comfortable and stable — weight fully on the lead foot, trail foot on its toe, chest facing the target, hands high. Video yourself holding the finish to check position. A stable finish is proof of a balanced swing.

Drill Tip: Count '1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi...' while holding the finish. Any wobble or step before 5 counts indicates a balance problem in the swing.
4

The Eyes Closed Swing Drill

Make full swings with your eyes closed. Without visual feedback, your body must rely entirely on proprioception (internal balance sense) to maintain position. Hit 10 shots eyes-closed, then 10 eyes-open. The contrast reveals how much you've been relying on visual information to compensate for balance deficits. Golfers who use their eyes to maintain balance find that closing them immediately exposes the balance problem.

Drill Tip: Do not use this drill on the course — only on the range in a safe environment. And definitely don't try to find where the ball went while your eyes are closed!
