Golf Impact Position Drills: Perfect Your Moment of Truth

Impact is the only thing that matters. Everything else is just a path to get there — or away from it.

Impact is the singular moment that determines every shot outcome. Ball flight, distance, accuracy — all of it comes from what happens in the half-second of the club approaching and contacting the ball. These drills build the impact position that the best ball-strikers in the world have spent careers perfecting.

Drill 1

Impact Bag Compression Drill

Strike an impact bag or rolled towel repeatedly, focusing on driving the handle forward (toward the target) at the moment of contact. The lead wrist should be flat or bowed (not cupped) and the shaft should lean toward the target. This builds the feel of compressing the ball rather than scooping it. Perform this drill until the forward shaft lean becomes automatic.

Reps: 25-30 impacts
Drill 2

Half-Ball Tee Drill

Tee the ball very low — so that only the bottom half of the ball is above the ground. This forces a downward strike rather than an upward scoop. If you try to scoop, you will hit under the ball and miss. If you compress properly, the ball launches on a clean, penetrating trajectory. This is an immediate feedback drill for iron contact quality.

Reps: 15-20 shots with a 7-iron or 8-iron
Drill 3

Shaft Lean Check at Impact

Use alignment sticks to mark impact position on video or with a mirror. Your hands should be approximately 4-8 inches ahead of the ball at impact for irons, with the shaft leaning toward the target. Practice slow-motion swings and pause at impact to feel and see this position. Take a photo of your impact position and compare it weekly.

Reps: 20 slow-motion impact pause rehearsals
Drill 4

Feet Together Drill

Hit 7-iron shots with your feet together (touching). This constraint forces a balanced, centered pivot that produces effortless impact — you cannot lean or sway when your base is so narrow. The feet-together drill consistently produces better impact quality and contact than normal stance shots for golfers fighting their lower body.

Reps: 20 shots, feet together
Drill 5

Lead Wrist Control Drill

Hit chip shots with your trail hand removed from the club at impact — a one-handed follow-through with only the lead hand. This forces the lead wrist to stay flat (not cupped) through impact, preventing the scoop that costs distance and consistency. Master this at chip shot length, then scale to longer pitches.

Reps: 15 one-handed chips

How GOATY AI Measures This

GOATY's WHIP score directly measures the release sequence that determines shaft lean, club face angle, and compression at impact. A low WHIP score almost always indicates a scooping impact pattern. These drills target the exact mechanics the WHIP score is measuring.
