What Is a Golf Handicap? Complete Beginner's Guide

Definition

A numerical measure of your potential playing ability that allows golfers of different skill levels to compete fairly on any course.

The Definition

A golf handicap (officially called a Handicap Index) is a numerical value representing a golfer's potential scoring ability. The lower the handicap, the better the player. A scratch golfer (handicap 0) is expected to shoot par or better. A 20 handicap is expected to shoot roughly 20 over par on a standard course. Handicaps make it possible for golfers of widely different abilities to compete fairly in the same event.

How Handicap Index Is Calculated

The World Handicap System (WHS), adopted globally in 2020, calculates your Handicap Index from your best 8 of your last 20 score differentials. A score differential adjusts your gross score for the course's Slope Rating and Course Rating, normalizing it to a 'standard' difficulty level. This means your handicap accurately reflects your ability regardless of whether you play an easy or difficult course.

Course Handicap vs Handicap Index

Your Handicap Index is your portable ability number. Your Course Handicap is what you actually get to subtract on a specific course — it adjusts your Handicap Index based on the course's Slope Rating (difficulty vs. a standard course) and Par. On a harder-than-average course (Slope 140), a 10 Handicap Index might give you 12 strokes; on an easier course (Slope 100), it might give you 8.

How Handicap Competitions Work

In a stroke play handicap competition, each player subtracts their Course Handicap from their gross score to get a net score. In match play, the higher handicap player receives strokes (typically half the difference) on the hardest holes as marked on the scorecard. The system is designed so every match feels competitive regardless of skill difference.

Posting Scores and Maintaining Your Handicap

In the United States, handicaps are managed through the GHIN system (Golf Handicap and Information Network). You post every acceptable score — both good and bad rounds — for the handicap calculation to be accurate. Handicaps update daily based on recent scores. Sandbagging (intentionally posting higher scores to inflate your handicap) is considered a serious breach of golf etiquette and can result in removal from handicap systems.
