How Would Your Golf Swing Measure Up?

Ever wondered how your golf swing stacks up against the greats? In this article, we’re going to explore the key differences between your swing and the elite model, often referred to as the GOAT Model. Through a comparative analysis of my swing and that of a student, we’ll uncover the essential mechanics that differentiate an average swing from a tour-level pattern.

The Importance of Setup

One of the first things to notice when comparing swings is the setup position. The golfer on the right, representing a typical mid to high handicap, is set up with his hips and shoulders positioned behind the ball. In contrast, the elite model sets up more into the lead side. This positioning is critical as it sets the foundation for a powerful and efficient swing.

In our example, I am hitting an eight iron while my student is hitting a seven iron. This difference in club length means that my setup can afford to be slightly more into the lead side without consequence. However, the key takeaway here is that a proper setup is essential for a successful golf swing.

Understanding Swing Dynamics

As the swings progress, it's evident that the student’s head moves significantly off the ball during the backswing. This is a clear sign of a lead-side push, which can adversely affect the efficiency of the swing. The student's left arm initiates the swing, causing his elbow to move away from his body. This is contrary to the GOAT Model, where the focus is on rotating the sternum away from the ball, allowing for a more efficient coil against the hips.

My swing demonstrates minimal head movement. Despite having limited neck mobility, I maintain a stable head position throughout the swing. This stability is crucial as it allows for better control and power transfer during the downswing. The contrast here clearly highlights how the initial movement can set the tone for the entire swing.

Impact Position and Body Alignment

As we approach the impact position, the differences become even more pronounced. The golfer on the right is nearly at impact while I am still completing my backswing. His head has moved dramatically, resulting in a more upright position at impact. Conversely, I have barely moved my head down, remaining closer to the original setup line.

When we overlay the skeleton models at impact, it becomes apparent that the elite model has a more lateral movement, which is essential for maintaining balance and power. My skeleton demonstrates slight sliding as the lead hip moves too far past the ball. While this is a minor flaw, it illustrates how even small mistakes can accumulate, making the game of golf feel much more challenging.

Efficiency and Biomechanics

The core principle in understanding the golf swing is recognizing that it’s simpler than it seems when executed correctly. The GOATs utilize their biomechanics and physics to their advantage, promoting efficiency in their swings. The key lies in how they move, ensuring that they are not fighting against their body’s natural mechanics.

If you want to improve your swing, it’s essential to analyze how you currently move and identify areas for adjustment. This is where swing analysis becomes invaluable. By using AI swing analysis tools, you can gain insights into your swing mechanics and compare them to the elite model.

Getting Your Swing Analyzed

If you’re interested in seeing how your swing measures up against the GOATs, I invite you to share your swing for analysis. Members of RotarySwing can post their swings in the community forum, where I will select one swing each week for comparison against the elite model. To participate, film your swing from a face-on view using a tripod, set at waist height, and ensure it’s recorded at 120 frames per second.
